Již od roku 1955 pořádá nadace World Press Photo se sídlem v holandském Amsterodamu mezinárodní soutěž nejlepších novinářských fotografií. Každoročně vybírá porota z osmnácti kategorií, ve kterých se do letošní soutěže přihlásilo rekordních 5 847 autorů se 101 960 fotografiemi. Do přehlídky byly nakonec vybrány snímky 62 profesionálních fotografů z 22 zemí. V rámci festivalu NethWorks.cz budeme mít příležitost shlédnout rekapitulaci událostí uplynulého roku 2009. Pro veřejnost bude výstava World Press Photo 2010 přístupná od 17. září. Bude probíhat v prostorách pražského Karolina, a to každý den i během státních svátků a víkendů vždy od 10:00 do 18:00.
Absolutního vítěze však porota vyhlásila už v lednu a stal se jím italský autor Petro Masturzo. Vítězný snímek pořídil 24. června loňského roku v Teheránu a zachycuje ženu, která křičí na protest proti výsledkům prezidentských voleb na střeše svého domu. "Fotografie ukazuje začátek něčeho, začátek velkého příběhu," říká o vítězném snímku předsedkyně poroty Ayperi Ecerová. Mezi oceněným snímky najdeme témata z Afganistánu, Pakistánu, Gazy či Kašmiru. Ale nechybí ani oblíbené kategorie jako sport, letos například s Lancem Armstrongem a jeho návratem k vrcholové cyklistice, či umění a portrét.

Since 1955 the World Press Photo Foundation, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, has been organizing an annual press photography contest. Every year the best photograph is awarded by a jury in the total of eighteen categories. This year a record amount of 101 960 photographs have been submitted by 5 847 authors. In the end, 62 photos taken by professional photographers from 22 countries have been selected for the exhibition. In the course of NethWorks.cz 2010 festival we will have an opportunity to see a recapitulation of the year 2009. The World Press Photo Exhibition will be open to public from the 17th of September. It will take place in Carolinum, Prague, every day, also during national holidays and weekends from 10.00 to 18.00.
The absolute winner, Italian author Pietro Masturzo, was already announced by the jury in January. The winning image was taken on the 24th of June in Tehran last year. It depicts a woman shouting from a rooftop in protest against the results of the presidential elections. „The photo shows the beginning of something, the beginning of a huge story, “comments Ayperi Ecer, the jury chair, on the winning photo. Among the awarded images we can find themes from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Gaza Strip or Kashmir. Favourite categories such as sport, this year with Lance Armstrong and his comeback to top racing cycling, or art and portrait photography are also part of the exhibition.
