Rembrandtův Učenec v pracovně z r. 1634 je jedním z nejvýznamnějších obrazů ve Sbírce starého umění Národní galerie ve Šternberském paláci a mezi díly tzv. „Zlatého věku holandského malířství“ vůbec. Je zajímavé, že zobrazuje stejný model, který Rembrandt zvolil i v jiných malbách ve stejném období, jakým je například Orientálec z amsterdamského Rijksmusea. Ukázal v něm muže, oděného do orientálního kostýmu a korunovaného důmyslně stočeným turbanem. Postavy tohoto typu se v Rembrandtově tvorbě nevyskytovaly náhodně. Přednášející, velmi známý rembrandtovský specialista Gary Schwartz, představí poprvé souhrnné výsledky průzkumu tohoto přitažlivého námětu. Co stálo v pozadí Rembrandtových Orientálců, jaké významy umělec sledoval? Co vypovídají o vztahu holandského protestantského malíře k východu, muže, jenž sám svůj domov nikdy neopustil?
Přednáška je předehrou k výstavnímu projektu Rembrandt a přátelé. Oslava holandského malířství v Praze, který se uskuteční v příštím roce a bude zahrnovat také výjimečnou výpůjčku Rembrandtova Orientálce z amsterdamského Rijksmusea. Přednáška bude pronesena v angličtině a dostupná v češtině prostřednictvím simultánního překladu se sluchátky.
Gary Schwartz se narodil v Brooklynu, v New Yorku v r. 1940. Studoval dějiny umění na New York University a na Johns Hopkins University v letech 1956 – 1965. V r. 1965 získal Kressovo stipendium do Nizozemí, kde se trvale usadil. Byl činný jako překladatel, editor a publicista, jako učitel, přednášející a spisovatel. Je zakladatelem mezinárodní organizace CODART, sdružující kurátory holandského a vlámského umění. Rembrandtovi se věnoval v publikacích: Rembrandt: all the etchings in true size (1977); Rembrandt, his life and his paintings: a new biography (1984) a Rembrandt´s univers: his art, his life, his works (2006).

Rembrandt van Rijn´s painting Scholar in a Study from 1634 forms one of the highlights of the National Gallery´s Collection of Old Masters at Sternberg palace and the Golden Age of Dutch Art. Interestingly it represents the same model that Rembrandt used in other works from the same period, for example in his Oriental from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. It shows a man dressed in eastern clothing, crowned off by an elaborate turban. Figures of this kind are not incidental in Rembrandt's work. For the first time, the speaker Gary Schwartz, a well-known Rembrandt-specialist, will present the results of a complete survey of this intriguing subject. What was the background and connotation of Rembrandt's Orientals? What do they tell us about the attitude to the east of a Dutch Protestant artist who never left his home country?
The lecture offers an overture to next year’s exhibition project Rembrandt and Friends. Celebrating Dutch Art in Prague, which will include the precious loanship of Rembrandt’s Oriental from the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
It will be given in English, a simultaneous interpretation in Czech via headphones will be available.
Gary Schwartz was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1940. He studied history of fine arts at New York University and John Hopkins University. In 1965 he had been awarded the Kress scholarschip in the Netherlands, where he decided to stay. He was active as translator, editor and publisher, pedagogue, lecturer and writer, and he is also a founder of CODART, an international network of organisations for curators of Dutch and Flemish art. He has written among others the following publications: Rembrandt: The Complete Etchings of Rembrandt: Reproduced in Original Size (1977); Rembrandt: his Life, his Paintings: a New Biography with all Accessible Paintings Illustrated in Colour (1984) and Rembrandt's Universe: His Art His Life His World (2006).
