Skupinu ONIX založili v 90tých letech dva mladí nizozemští architekti - H. Meijer a A. van de Beld v Groningen. Charakteristickým rysem jejich prvních projektů byla inspirace severo-holandskou tradiční typologií velkých stavení, stodol a kostelů a charakteristické použití dřeva jako tradičně užívaného materiálu. Pozoruhodná ovšem byla i jejich interpretace těchto staveb – jakási humorná zkratka, neočekávané užití archetypu ve zcela odlišné a překvapující situaci. Přestože skupina ONIX není nejvýraznějším nizozemským představitelem „ekologické architektury“, s tímto tématem evidentně žije, ale neinterpretuje ho pouze mechanicky. Naopak, výtvarná stránka projektů skupiny ONIX je velmi svébytná, byť užití materiálů a výběr konstrukcí je pečlivě váženo z ekologických hledisek. Podobně jako hledají tito mladí architekti výtvarné inspirace v lokálním kontextu, stejně smýšlejí i o užití lokálních materiálů v širších souvislostech.

The Onix group was established in the 90ies by two young Dutch architects - H. Meijer and A. van de Beld v Groningen. Their first projects were characterised by their inspiration in North-Dutch traditional typology of big country houses, barns and churches, and the typical usage of wood as traditional material. Remarkable was, however, also their interpretation of these buildings – a sort of humorous abbreviation, an unexpected usage of archetype in a completely different and surprising situation. Even though the ONIX group is not the most significant Dutch representative of “ecological architecture“, it evidently lives with this theme, but its interpretation is not purely mechanical. On the contrary, the artistic aspect of the projects by the ONIX group is very peculiar, although the usage of materials and the choice of constructions are considered properly with regard to ecological aspects. Similarly to their artistic inpspiration in local context these architects use the same way of thinking concerning the usage of local materials in wider interrelations.
